What are you passionate about?
If you ask me, I’d start firing off a list and, if you aren’t careful, you’d be stuck in a deep conversation about my niche interests. I don’t recommend this. 😉
However, many, many people struggle with this question. They might not even know what they’re passionate about! Or they may have once been passionate about something and wonder why that feeling has drifted away.
A good way to understand and nurture your passions is to think about what you do in your “free time.” I know, I know, we are all far too busy for this thing called free time. After friends, family, work, and other obligations, we still have to squeeze in cooking, cleaning, errands, chores, and, if there is any time left, sleep.
Yet we do find time to squeeze things in. We find time to watch TV, read books, or doomscroll social media. There is still plenty of time to devote to what we are passionate about. We just have to want to want to.
In some cases, we might have spent years wanting to do something. Maybe it’s writing a book or auditioning for the local theatre. Maybe it’s building a chicken coop so you can finally get those hens and earn your degree in “crazy chicken math.” So why do we put off the things we know we want to do and instead spend our free time on things that just kind of… help us pass the time?
Is it because we’re too tired to explore and learn new things? Are we too comfortable with the same old, same old? Is doing the thing too expensive to even consider? Or is change a scary concept that hangs uncomfortable question marks over our heads?
If time is the only major roadblock and we really, truly, definitely want to do something, we’ll find the time to do it.
If you’re still not sure what you’re passionate about, start small. Pick the thing you keep meaning to do, and do ten minutes of it this week.
Worst case scenario, you’ve learned something, even if that something is that maybe you liked the idea of the thing more than doing the actual thing..
Best case scenario, you’re doing crazy chicken math by Friday!
Warm regards,
Jimerson Adkins
P.S. For those not familiar with the concept of crazy chicken math, it’s a strange paradox where, when you start to have chickens, they somehow start multiplying. For example: If you intend to have only three hens, somehow, within several months, you now have six. The only real way to combat this is to not visit the chick nursery when buying more chicken feed.
